The Tree
It is autumn.
The leaves whisper under our feet: what is the meaning of life? The leaves help the tree
grow; they are part of it. Generations of them pass, participating in the accomplishment
of this growth. We too are part of a immense body in the universe, and each one of us
participates in its accomplishment.
We are a
multitude of members forming together a great body in God. It doesn't matter what our race
or origin may be, we are all equal and united in the same Spirit of God. Each member is
essential in order for this body to be complete and fully alive, but each one of us has to
make a personal commitment and orient his or her life to the same end as the entire body,
for the benefit of all.
We need each
other to advance. Every refusal of unity due to selfishness, individualism, spirit of
dissension or indifference undermines this body and prevents it from growing.
For if our
right foot decides to go left and the other one right... what can be accomplished by that?
By living "every man for himself", the entire body is afflicted and each
individual life suffers the consequences.
Each human
being is a member of an immense body, the head of which is Jesus Christ. That is why it is
so important to be conscious of our belonging and to act properly.
"For
the full content of divine nature lives in Christ, in his humanity, and you have been
given full life in union with him. He is supreme over every spiritual ruler and
authority." (Colossians 2,
9-10)
"Someone
will say: "I am allowed to do anything". Yes; but not everything is good for
you. I could say that I am allowed to do anything, but I am not going to let anything make
me its slave" (...). The body is to be used to serve the Lord (...). Use your bodies
for God's glory." (1
Corinthians 6,12-20)
St. Paul
invites us to respect our body. We must learn to model it in order to make it more perfect
and beautiful. "Because the temple of God is sacred, and this temple...
is YOU."
(1 Corinthians
3,17)
