Toward
the Origin
You look at a
nice car...
If I told you
that the car made itself, would you believe me?
What about if I
told you that a stone can fly by itself, without having to throw it in the air? You would
say: that's impossible.
And if I say
that energy creates itself, without a source that gives it out ("perpetuum
mobile")? You will say: we know that's impossible.
But if I
persisted in saying that energy can transform itself to become matter or an object?..
We know that,
basically, nothing comes to existence by itself, by chance. That is true for all matter,
and even more so for living matter, which is incredibly complex, structured and logic in
its essence, in its functions and, at the same time... radiant with beauty.
You may talk
of... evolution... an exceptional situation... an unexpected encounter of chemical
substances that were united in a favourable environment, in particular conditions, and so
on... the way science could explain it. Well...
We know that
matter is nothing else than a form of passing energy. That means that, before the
existence of matter, there was energy.
Then... let us
go back, to that moment when the matter of the universe didn't exist yet. In order for it
to be formed, there had to be a source of energy. We can suppose also that this source was
endowed with a creative, intelligent, inventive and logic will that would allow it to
devise the global concept of the physical universe, with all its forms and movements...
At that moment
in time everything was new, and the physical laws that we know today didn't exist yet,
because, before that... nothing existed.
Even if we
admit that the universe could have come to existence "all by itself", by a
number of things happening by hazard, in spite of the fact that "things" didn't
exist at that time yet (!), it is evident that hazard couldn't act logically and
intelligently. Therefore, in this alternative, this same hazard would produce a universal
anachronous creation, weird and incongruous, where the element of beauty would be
excluded.
Yet, we know
that the universe is all the opposite of that.
By seriously
considering the facts, we can try to take a glimpse, as through a very small opaque
window, at the ORIGIN of all this greatness, which can be no other than GOD
HIMSELF.
When we
consider the extraordinary enormity of the universe, it is useless to ask any question:
why, how... because no one is capable of understanding, of... imagining, or... answering.
We know,
through the revelation of the saints, that God is LOVE. That He is a SPIRIT OF
LOVE. For Him, there is no past or future. He exists outside of time because... HE
IS.
God didn't need
to create anything - or to create us - because He is EVERYTHING in Himself. Yet, He
created everything for us, as an act of overflowing Love, to share everything with us.
To end this
reflection, here is an excerpt of the Introduction to the Gospel of St. John, about the
origin of everything:
"Before
the world was created, the Word already existed; he was with God, and he was the same as
God. From the very beginning the Word was with God. Through him God made all things; not
one thing in all creation was made without him..."
(John 1,1-4)
