Learning
Sometimes you
say to yourself: "I am fed up with school! I spend my time inside this
"box", without windows, without life, while the outside world is so beautiful! I
want to take advantage of my youth and be free like a bird!"... That's normal;
we all have those moments of discouragement. But you are not a bird, your life has a
totally different dimension. And... what does "taking advantage" means?
Life is not
easy, and to live it to the full it is important to learn, to possess a know-how. This is
necessary not only for your own good, but also for the good of those around you. It is
important that you learn to develop your potential and your creativity so that you may
accomplish your life instead of living as a parasite, depending on others. You
have already in you everything you need. But it is not enough to know that you were born
with certain talents and capacities; your role is to learn to develop them and grow.
Now while you
are very young, you are contented with few things to "live well". But later on,
your needs and duties will be greater, and if you are not prepared to face them, they are
going to become a problem. Because in order to harvest, you have to sow.
An education is
going to give you the opportunity to discover and live the essential values of life that
will allow you to consolidate yourself as a human being. Want it or not, "neutrality
in our world is an illusion, and everything in life is a reflection of values".
What are
values? It is what makes a person worthy of respect, the attitudes that we desire to see
in a human being in the moral, intellectual and professional domains. It is "a
pole of attraction capable of inciting the person and making it apt to choose what is
worth seeking".
A value is
expressed by a free choice that is traduced in acts and a lifestyle. A value leads
to involvement; and education is there to offer those choices. "The school, after
the family, is the place for this education" (Petit Robert
and Prospective).
Of course, you
can choose to evade it and try to pass your courses with the least possible effort, only
to have something to write on your C.V. But if you do that, you will not have acquired any
deep knowledge, and when the time to work will come, instead of confronting the situation
with interest and full control, you will have to submit to it by necessity, in order to
survive, and that will be very regrettable. Just because you didn't learn a trade...
The fictitious
values of our consuming society may create the illusion that, the more you study, the more
money, prestige and honour you will have. Evidently, thanks to your studies, your
financial situation is going to improve, but the real end of your studies is more that
just MONEY!
Don't let
yourself be deceived by this false image of happiness. All your life depends on it, and
you are made for so much more than that!
